Situated at 2400 km south-east of the African coast, Mauritius is an independent country and a republic. The island is of volcanic origin and has a surface area of around 1,865 Km².

The climate is a maritime sub-tropical one : Summer lasts from October to April while Winter from May to September and temperatures vary between the plateau & the coast.
The highest temperature occurs in January-February with midday temperature of around 25 degrees Celcius on the plateau & 31 degrees on the coast.
July & August are the coldest months with midday & night temperatures of around 19 & 13 degrees on the plateau and 25 & 19 degrees on the coast.

The Mauritian Rupee is divided into 100 cents and bank notes are available in denominations of 25, 50, 100, 200, 500 1,000 and 2,000 Rupees. Coins are available in 5 cents, 20 cents, 50 cents, one rupee, 5 rupees and 10 rupees.

Travellers' Cheques and foreign currencies can be changed at bank counters and official money changers. Credit cards such as American Express, Visa and Mastercard are accepted by most hotels, restaurants, shops, etc...
